More Flattening the Curve

3/16/2020

Here's my Facebook post from March 12 (four days ago):

I know you’ll lose revenue now, but if we flatten the curve ASAP, that revenue loss will be less overall. Send everyone home to recover (even if they don’t know they are sick yet) so they are no longer contagious. This stops the spread.

Come on, do you want to be that person who spikes a 103 degree fever on Monday, then has to look back at your weekend out at restaurants? Out at a club show? At the mall? At a movie? At the gym? And then you have to notify everyone of those places that you now have symptoms and/or have tested positive?

I know you don’t want that. I don’t.

Flattening the Curve

3/16/2020

I can't believe I first posted this on March 12th, just four days ago. When I posted it, I'd only known the term for a day or two, but now I feel like I've known about it for weeks! Isn't it interesting how much can happen in such a short period of time? Flattening the curve has so much to do with our behavioral choices right now. In order to not overtax our medical infrastructure, the best practice appears extreme, although I would argue that it isn't. We are being asked to wash our hands for 20 seconds or more with hot water often. We are being asked to become aware of what our hands touch and then how often we touch our faces. Ideally, we never touch our faces unless we have thoroughly washed our own hands after touching anything else. Sounds extreme, but it slows the spread of the virus. This behavior is a rational behavior in response to a pandemic. I'm willing to do it, and I encourage you to do the same.

What's with Toilet Paper Hoarding?

3/16/2020

I first shared this on March 10th. If nothing else, it's amusing what people had to say about why they were buying all the toilet paper. On a serious note, I did find it frustrating that people were depleting the available toilet paper to such an extent that there are now people who don't have it, and there wasn't really any good reason other than free-floating anxiety. You can feel anxiety without acting on it. You can assess fears, determine they are irrational, still have them, and NOT buy up all the toilet paper.

My favorite is this guy, Danny...

Danny, 21
VICE: Hey Danny, why are you buying all this toilet paper?
Danny: Because we're all idiots. Legit.

How Coronavirus Spreads

3/16/2020

I first shared this article on March 5th. I think it's important to try and understand reality as it is. This shows how coronavirus spread in Singapore. It shows the type of contact people people had which led to transmission of the virus. It's also just a really neat graphical display of data. They've been updating it over time to show what has happened with these first infected people.

Thoughts from a Therapist

3/16/2020

As a rule, I don't add clients as friends on social media to keep a healthy boundary between my home and work life. However, I've been posting my thoughts about managing anxiety during this time on my personal Facebook page, and I think it may be useful to share some of those thoughts (and perhaps others) here. I am also finding lots of great articles and resources that I'm happy to share with my clients. Dear Client (and Readers), If you have any special topic requests, please let me know. I'll probably be posting once or twice a day. Sometimes longer thoughts, sometimes just link shares.

I will not be allowing comments, since client comments may reveal who my clients are to each other and to the world. That's not allowed due to HIPAA privacy rules, so I'm afraid this can not be a public conversation. I wish there were a way around that, but I do believe that these rules do serve the great good.

It's a very interesting time to be alive, isn't it?
